Wizorb… is awesome!

by on Sep.29, 2011, under Video Games

Wizorb is a new entry in the Xbox Live indie games area, though it should be a full-on Arcade title. Unlike most of the games in the indie section, Wizorb is a fully realized game. Created by Tribute Games, a Montreal based studio dedicate to creating games pixel art and classic game design. And they are really really good at it.

The video above should give you the gist of Wizorb. You play a wizard who battles monsters via an ‘Arkanoid’ game mechanic with a few RPG elements. The game controls perfectly, the art is fantastic if you are a fan of pixel art, the music is perfect for the setting, it is very cheap (240 MSPoints) and most important of all it is really fun.

I hope Tribute brings the game to other platforms, it would be a shame to see it waste away on the under promoted xbla indie channel. iOS? Steam? Anyone?

Go buy the game.

Shining Force – iPhone

by on Sep.28, 2010, under Video Games

This is how I survived multiple five hour long flights on a crowded Southwest Airlines 737…

Shining Force, the legendary Strategy RPG for the Sega Genesis has recently been ported to the iPhone. I bought it day one, as I am a huge Shining Force fan. As a kid I grew up around Sega systems, the Genesis was the first console I ever owned, and the two Shining Force games for it are some of my all time favorite games.

If you have never had the opportunity to play Shining Force, here’s a basic run down. You play Max, the leader of the Shining Force, a group of warriors on a quest to stop Darksol from awakening an ultimate evil. As a strategy RPG you move your troops on a map and battle monsters. The combat is shown in quick battle vignettes which really add a lot to an otherwise very simple game.

Combat & Maps Galore!

If you need a game that will soak up some idle time, and you have an iPhone. Pick up this classic ASAP. Hopefully SEGA will port the sequel, Shining Force II, soon as it is an overall improvement over the first game.

MINECRAFT

Too deep we delved there, and woke the nameless fear.”

Visions of Dwarven mines, Mithril, and Balrogs, danced in my head when I first heard about Minecraft on 4chan’s traditional games board a few months ago, and with the recent Penny-Arcade comics the game has garnered a lot of buzz.

And it’s well deserved.

Developed by Markus Persson, the game is very simple yet very addicting. You are a lone man (unless your playing multi-player) in a randomly generated world, and to stay alive you must DIG.  There is no plot. No dialogue. Nothing but digging, crafting, and slaying. The visuals are simple cubes with 8-bit style textures. But it works.

A copy of Minecraft is about 9 euros, and I highly recommend it. You will have fun, and you will be addicted.

I knew I was after I built a floating stone skull castle atop a mountain, and then had a dream about living in it later that night.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4

I’m pretty excited about the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog game. I haven’t even put a second thought into any Sonic games since number 3 on the Genesis…

Growing up I didn’t have any Nintendo systems. We had a Genesis, and it was good times. I put a lot of hours into Sonic The Hedgehog games, and this new one looks to be a true return to form.  Some may wonder why Sega even bothered to take Sonic into 3D and Go Karts, and the Olympics, etc… But I am personally glad they did. The gap in time between the last true Sonic game and now, is almost perfect. There has been plenty of time for the old guard to build up nostalgia for the game they played as a kid, and plenty of time for a new generation of gamers to appear that may not have ever played the older titles.

I am looking forward to this game. (period)

Game Music Comparisons

There was a post on Kotaku today that featured a youtube clip comparing an Elton John song to a Mega Man 2 song. It was pretty close, but not as close as this video of Castlevania & Yngwie Malmsteen that was posted in the comments section… Too rad.

Hit the jump for  the Elton John / Mega Man video and a few others!

A Pokemon Proposal

by on Jul.28, 2010, under Video Games

Saw this on Kotaku… and I had to post it here.

More time and effort went into this proposal than probably any other date request in history. If the recipient didn’t say yes, then I hope they get eaten by a Charizard.
