Book Review – Baltimore : The Plague Ships
by Johnny on Aug.05, 2010, under Comics
The first issue of Mike Mignola’s newest series “Baltimore : The Plague Ships” was just released.
The series follows Lord Henry Baltimore, who is hunting a traveling vampire. The setting is 1916 France, vampires have come to feed on the victims of a plague that recently spread throughout the village of VilleFrance.
Baltimore is on the trail of a vampire which has lead him to Villefrance. Are the newly converted vampires that infest the village a match for the one legged hunter…?
More after the jump.
The story starts off with action, but little info about what is happening and who its happening too. A bald, one legged man, is running though a village dispatching vampires. However, by the end of the issue enough back story and plot has been revealed that most everything makes sense.
Ben Stenbeck’s art fits Mignola’s style. I would rather have Mignola drawing this book himself, but beggars can’t be choosers.
The vampire hunting plot could easily be connected to the Hellboy universe. Though it stands up on its own just fine. The only gripe I have about this issue is that the main character’s abilities were loosely defined. On the one hand, Baltimore easily dispatched vampires left and right. On the other hand, a group of normal men easily through him in a prison cell…
Aside from my own personal gripes about character/plot management, I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to issue no.2
