Book Review – Curse of the Mutants : Storm + Gambit

by on Aug.26, 2010, under Comics

The ‘X-Men – Curse of the Mutants’ story arc continues with a one shot featuring Storm and Gambit. The two  master thieves are sent on a mission to retrieve a item critical to stopping the recent Vampire threat.

One of my pet peeves with comic books is that the cover art does not often reflect the internal content. Most of the time the cover art is better. I’m looking at you Mike Mignola!  This issue is actually the reverse. Upon first glance I was not interested in this book. The cover didn’t grab me and urge me to read the issue and Gambit’s facial expression is ridiculous. On top of that Storm and Gambit are not my favorite characters in the X-Men roster. (Yes I grew up in the 90′s… The Fox X-Men cartoon failed to instill in me a love for Gambit that many of my peers have.)

I gave the book a read anyway, it’s a one-shot that ties into a story arc I am enjoying for the most part, so why the hell not. Yes, this X-Men vampire business is a total Twilight fad cash-in. But at least it tries to be tongue in cheek about it. (And this arc is making more sense than whatever-the-hell is going on with the Avengers right now. Time Travel…. ugh.)

More after the jump…

I was plasently surprised with the art I found inside.

I really like Chris Bachalo’s style. It’s clean and detailed at the same time. It reminds me of Ryan Ottley’s work on the Invincible series.

As usual I don’t want to give up any real plot info about this book, but if you are trying to follow the “Cure of the Mutants” story, this one is a must read. Big plot event’s occur within it’s pages. It’s a fun read, the art is great, and the plot actually effects the arc… this is rare for a stand alone.
