Book Review – Invincible #72

by on Jun.04, 2010, under Comics

Invincible is easily my favorite “cape” series. Robert Kirkman’s writing style is superb. Coupled with Ryan Ottley’s clean art style, you end up with one of the most engaging & best looking monthly comics.

Invincible no.72 kicks off the action of the ‘Viltrumite War’ story arc. The issue is one long fight sequence, and yet when you reach the end, the plot has moved forward significantly. That is one of my favorite things about Kirkman. He can push the plot forward amidst all the blood, and the plot will still make sense. Detractors of the series may complain that it is to focused on fighting and gore. I however find the gore to be in a way, realistic. I can hear it now, “Super Heroes are not realistic.”  Yes, that is a true statement. And yet I find it kind of hard to swallow that Superman wouldn’t be causing heads to implode during a fight also.

Invincible doesn’t beat around the bush. The characters have super powers. If they punch something, it’ll bleed. A lot.

I’m not going to ruin the story for you here, you’ll have to pick the issue up on your own to find out what happens. It’s a doozy.  Invincible #72 is my book of the week hands down.
