Thunderbolts #144

Marvel comics has entered what they are calling ‘The Heroic Age’ the good guys are back in control and the bad guys are once again the bad guys… I got back into comics around the start of the ‘Civil War’ event, the Thunderbolts series existed at this time, but I didn’t follow it much. At the time Baron Zemo was running a team of former villains for the government. Eventually due to multiple events, Norman Osborn comes into power and the Thunderbolts team is converted into a new Avengers team and used as his own personal hit squad.

Like all good empires, Osborn’s came crashing down. Steve Rodgers, formerly known as Captain America,  is now in charge. One of the first orders of business for the new regime is to restart the Thunderbolts program. Cap decides that the best man for the job would be criminal turned hero, Luke Cage.

The formation of the new thunderbolts team is the focus of this issue. Cage hand picks his team from the villains currently incarcerated in the maximum security prison known as ‘The Raft’. Pick up the book if this sounds at all interesting….

Based on this issue I plan to follow the Thunderbolts for the time being. I really liked Kev Walkers art, the plot is interesting, and Luke Cage has grown on me since New Avengers started. Plus I’m a sucker for a certain unstoppable villain, and the way the Juggernaught is drawn in this book is epic.

If your looking to start reading a new series, you could do worse than Thunderbolts.
